National Provider Identifier (NPI)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
of 1996 requires the adoption of a standard unique identifier for
health care providers. The NPI Final Rule issued January 23,
2004 adopted the NPI as this standard.
An NPI is required for almost all providers wanting to enroll in
the IHCP. Non healthcare providers, called atypical providers are
not required to report an NPI. Waiver providers and most
transportation providers are not required to have an NPI as these
providers are considered atypical.
Use the online NPI Reporting Tool
to report your NPI.
